Timothy Scherman, the President of the Elizabeth Oakes Smith Society, will introduce you to Elizabeth Oakes Smith, one of the most well-recognized, widely published and eventually even notorious figures of the 19th century. Enjoy live readings derived from her diary, and then cross the street to the Lakeview Cemetery for a look at Oakes Smith's gravesite.

The presenter, Timothy Scherman, is the President of the Elizabeth Oakes Smith Society since its founding in 2006.

From the time of her emergence as a celebrity in the 1840s, Elizabeth Oakes Smith was one of the most well-recognized, widely published and eventually even notorious figures of the 19th century--perhaps most during her time in Patchogue, after her son Appleton was indicted for equipping a slave ship in 1861.

Enjoy live readings derived from Oakes Smith's diary during the time when she lived in Patchogue.

After the talk, enjoy a walk across to Lakeview Cemetery, where new features to the gravesite of Seba Smith and Elizabeth Oakes Smith will be dedicated, including an embedded QR code that will direct those visiting the gravesite to information about the couple's storied career and the growing evidence that "The Willows," the stately home that once stood nearby, may well have been the tavern where Washington stopped on his tour of Long Island in 1790.
